Welcome
It all started back in 1993, when I worked with young people with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD), in Residential Education.
I worked with a young man, who found himself in the unenviable position of not having anywhere in the care system for him to live. I was put in the unenviable position of escorting him to a not particularly good Bed and Breakfast in a particularly poor part of a South Yorkshire town. He was distraught and begged me not to leave him.
From that day I vowed that I would one day open up a Children’s Home that was a real home, not a ‘unit’, but somewhere that the young people can feel relaxed and happy.
In 1996, I moved to a new job in West Yorkshire, and there I met Alan Fisher, who was the Care Manager of a Local Authority Residential School. I worked with Alan and his team for eleven years until, and during that time my daughter Gemma Spinks joined us as a Child Care Officer, before returning to being a freelance Nanny.
Between taking the young man to the Bed and Breakfast, and working with Alan and Gemma, our combined experience of working with young people with EBD was over 30 years.
This gave us the encouragement we needed to go through the arduous process of buying a property, and registering Keswick Care, which started in 2005, and we had our first referrals in March 2007.
Keswick Care formally opened its doors in April 2007 to two young people, and both stayed up until their 18th birthday.
Neither myself, Alan or Gemma would have been able to open up such a successful Home, without the combined efforts of each of us, and the support we offer to each other. We also have a good staff team, and young people who are settled, which makes for a safe, happy environment for everyone.
